Give your hair some tender, loving care
If you’re reading this, you almost certainly have a close relationship with your hair. You’ve probably experimented with different styles (Gen Z center part or classic side part? Curled or straight-ironed?) and hair accessories (that twisty metal thing that makes buns, or the timeless sock bun?).
And, of course, an artist’s palette of colors. Whether it’s a full bleach, or subtle highlights or St. Patrick’s green, discreet grey-cover or pastel rainbow, dyeing and bleaching your hair is always an adventure.
But an artist needs more than a color palette and tools. They need a sturdy, strong canvas to work on. If their screen’s cracked into spiderwebs or their canvas is worn and ratty, all their talent isn’t going to end up in beautiful art.
It’s the same with hair. Your chic hairstyles and vibrant colors will only look their best with healthy, nourished hair.
Here’s what giving your hair regular TLC (tender, loving care) will do:
Soothe Your Scalp
It all starts here. Since hair growth begins in the scalp, you need a healthy one to have healthy hair. The most common cause for scalp woes is getting burnt, either by harmful dyes or UV rays.
To save your scalp (and hair) from getting dried out by sun damage, make sure it’s protected from 10 am-2 pm at least. If your hair’s on the thin side, this means a hat, scalp sunscreen, or just chilling in the shade.
And you can prevent that irritation from hair coloring and bleaching with the 3-Step pH Plex system. The pH Plex active ingredient not only protects and repairs your hair during and after coloring and bleaching, it is also a known skin care active that is in thousands of applications demonstrated to be able to significantly reduce and eliminate those unwanted itching and burning sensations we all know about.
Stop Dandruff
Sun-damaged, dry, and greasy scalps often shed embarrassing skin flakes. To prevent these unwelcome visitors:
- Use a gentle, moisturizing shampoo. Even if your hair is greasy, harsh shampoos strip it of healthy oils. This just makes your scalp go into oil production hyperdrive!
A moisturizing shampoo cleans your hair while “tricking” your scalp into thinking it doesn’t need to make more oil.
- Condition all your hair, scalp to end, after every time you shampoo, and leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing. (I use this time to shave.)
- Find out how often your hair needs to be washed. Some textures flourish with a week between shampoos; others start looking limp after a day. See how long your hair can go while looking good. With the right shampoo, it may be longer than you think.
This step is important because if you wash your hair more than it needs, it may resist being regularly stripped of oil by…you guessed it, making more. Not to mention that a too-frequent cleansing process can cause dull hair and split ends. (I speak from experience.)
A gentle, consistent cleansing routine will eliminate dandruff by balancing your scalp’s oil production and moisturizing your skin.
Keep Broken Ends at Bay
Unfortunately, sometimes styling your hair means that you’ll look more unkempt than before! It’s not fair, but using 200+ degree heat on unprotected hair frizzles the shafts until they split and stiffen.
To preserve your chic appearance, expose your hair to as little heat as possible. If you use curling irons, straighteners, blow-dryers, or other hot styling tools, coat your hair in a heat protectant serum first. Heat protectants will keep your strands safe and sound from the hair-frying temperatures.
Of course, hair dye is also infamous for causing split ends. Britnee Alexis’s video shows how to avoid and repair those with the pH Plex system.
Grow Thicker Hair
With a healthy hair care routine, your hair can grow thicker and more luscious than ever. This also gives you an excuse to indulge in a relaxing scalp massage – one study shows that consistent 4-minute massages help thicken hair by stimulating blood flow in the scalp!
Make You Shine!
For your glossiest mane, give your hair two weekly treats: a deep conditioner, and a stabilizing treatment such as pH Plex 3. The deep conditioner will drench your locks in much-needed moisturizer, while the stabilizer will protect them from environmental stress and repair its bonds from the inside out.
Your favorite style will look better than ever on healthy hair!
